As a man-made deepwater wavepool inspired by the Eisbach riverwave in Munich, citywave® started a one of a kind  event series called „Surf & Style“ at Munich airport in 2011. At the events annual highlight, the „European Championship in Stationary Waveriding“ , riversurfers for the first time ever competed with ocean surfers from around the world  in an everlasting, perfect stationary wavepool setup.

During 6 years of competitive surfing on citywave® the event and media attention grew bigger and so did the citywave® community. Soon it became clear that the competition, which is now the worlds biggest surf event on an artificial standing wave had to feature 4 categories: Women, Men, Masters and Groms (U 16). With individual judging criteria and a professional team of international surf-judges a new sport was born: „stationary wave riding“.

Even living surf legends like Rob Machado, Shane Beschen and Robby Naish stopped by to get their surf on. The level of surfing continued to improve as well as the technical standard of citywave®. At the Surf & Style 2016 national and international surf stars competed on a 10 meter wide, 1.6 m high citywave® installation for the title of European Champion and 10.000 € prize money. Local riversurf legend Tao Schirrmacher took the win in front of 20.000 spectators and now holds the record of 3 European titles.
